Rosenborg reward By Rise

Ola By Rise has stepped up to replace Åge Hareide as the coach of Norwegian champions Rosenborg BK.

Double winners
The 43-year-old By Rise played in goal for Norway and Rosenborg and for the past eight years has been an assistant coach at the Trondheim club. Crowned Norwegian champions in September before completing the double last month, Rosenborg have long had a tradition of promoting from within. So when Hareide accepted an offer from the Norwegian Football Association (NFF), By Rise was the obvious candidate to replace him.

Compensation package
Hareide had been courted by the NFF following the resignation of Nils Johan Semb, and the 50-year-old agreed to lead his country in qualifying for the 2006 FIFA World Cup after a compensation package was agreed with Rosenborg, where he was contracted for another two seasons.

Assistant named
By Rise will be assisted by Per Joar Hansen, who last month stood down as joint coach of Swedish side GIF Sundsvall after helping preserve their Allsvenskan status. Rune Skarsfjord and the legendary former Rosenborg coach Nils Arne Eggen will work as consultants. Rosenborg are in the UEFA Cup third round and next season will compete in the second UEFA Champions League qualifying round.
