Carr trouble on Tyneside

Group D: Stephen Carr and Carlos Martins suffered injuries in domestic action at the weekend.

Newcastle
Stephen Carr's return from a knee injury for Newcastle United FC against Manchester United FC lasted just 18 minutes before the Irish international defender collapsed with a similar problem. He will undergo a scan and is expected to be out for at least two weeks. Andy O'Brien came on to replace Carr but was unable to prevent Newcastle sliding to a third straight Premiership defeat, hot on the heels of their midweek exit from the English League Cup at the hands of Chelsea FC.

Sochaux
Brazilian striker Ilan, who scored six goals in four games before injuring his groin in FC Sochaux-Montbéliard's midweek French League Cup win against Stade Brestois 29, sat out the 1-1 home draw with FC Istres on Saturday. A thigh strain kept team-mate Santos out of the match, which saw the gap between Sochaux and Ligue 1 leaders Olympique Lyonnais stretch to ten points. Guirane N'Daw, who came off the bench to replace Ilan in the cup game, will be out for a fortnight with an elbow problem.

Sporting
Hugo Viana scored twice to help Sporting Clube de Portugal trounce Boavista FC 6-1 on Sunday and move within five points of top spot in the SuperLiga. Coach José Peseiro omitted Brazilian defender Beto, who injured his knee in the run-in to the match, then had to substitute Carlos Martins during the second half after the attacking midfielder suffered a thigh strain. But the 22-year-old is not expected to miss Sporting's trip to SC Beira-Mar next weekend.

Panionios
Hellenic National League strugglers Panionios NFC have not played since their goalless draw with Apollon Kalamarias FC eight days ago. They have scored just one goal in their last eight games and travel to fellow UEFA Cup hopefuls Egaleo FC next weekend with question marks over the participation of Panagiotis Giannopoulos (flu) and Alexandros Tziolis (thigh). However, Czech centre-half Petr Vlcek has resumed training after overcoming an ankle sprain.

Dinamo Tbilisi
FC Dinamo Tbilisi welcomed back several players from injury but goalkeeper Irakli Zoidze, striker Levan Melkadze and winger Dato Kvirkvelia failed to inspire the side to victory at FC Kolkheti-1913 Poti. The goalless draw enabled FC Torpedo Kutaisi and FC Tbilisi to climb above them at the top of the Georgian Premier League. Brazilian midfielder César Romero is also back in the squad but 20-year-old defender Shota Kashia will miss the home game against Sporting on 25 November as he prepares to undergo knee surgery.
