Asenjo out of Atlético final

Back-up goalkeeper Sergio Asenjo is set for a six-month spell on the sidelines after tearing knee ligaments during Club Atlético de Madrid's draw at Real Sporting de Gijón on Saturday.

Club Atlético de Madrid reserve goalkeeper Sergio Asenjo has been ruled out of the UEFA Europa League final against Fulham FC on Wednesday after it was confirmed the 20-year-old tore cruciate ligaments in his right knee.

The Spanish Under-21 international started the 1-1 Liga draw at Real Sporting de Gijón ahead of first-choice David de Gea, but was forced out of the game in the 13th minute after landing awkwardly under a challenge from Mate Bilić. Subsequent tests revealed the extent of the injury and Asenjo is now scheduled to undergo surgery on Tuesday before beginning a six-month rehabilitation period.
