Steinhöfer bolsters Basel ranks

Round of 32 contenders FC Basel 1893 have completed the signing of 24-year-old midfielder Markus Steinhöfer, who signs on a two-and-a-half year deal from Eintracht Frankfurt.

Markus Steinhöfer has left Eintracht Frankfurt to sign a two-and-a-half year deal with UEFA Europa League contenders FC Basel 1893.

The 24-year-old, whose contract was due to expire at the end of the season, began his career in the FC Bayern München academy. He moved to Eintracht from FC Salzburg in July 2008, having joined the Austrian club from Bayern two years earlier, and has since scored three goals in 41 league games. He was loaned to 1. FC Kaiserslautern for the second half of last season.

Basel, third-place finishers in UEFA Champions League Group E, play FC Spartak Moskva in the round of 32 on 17 and 24 February. Defender Samuel Inkoom has left St. Jakob-Park for FC Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk.
