SC Freiburg have added to their squad ahead of the UEFA Europa League group stage with the signing of Arsenal FC midfielder Francis Coquelin on a season-long loan deal.

SC Freiburg have completed the signing of Arsenal FC midfielder Francis Coquelin on a season-long loan deal.

Coquelin, 22, is a versatile defensive midfielder who can also play in either full-back position. The former France Under-21 midfielder has made 21 appearances for the Gunners since joining from Stade Lavallois-Mayenne FC in 2008 and enjoyed a spell on loan at FC Lorient in 2010/11 before penning at a new deal with the north London club in 2012.

"We are pleased about Francis' arrival," said Freiburg's acting sporting director Jochen Saier. "He's a dynamic midfielder who, along with his defensive qualities, can also contribute in attack."

Freiburg finished fifth in the Bundesliga last term and will begin their UEFA Europa League campaign in the group stage, the draw for which takes place on 29 August in Monaco.
