Europa League matchday one by numbers

UEFA.com delves deep into the first week of UEFA Europa League action to come up with ten of the best stats, including a suprising trend, a swift hat-trick and a winless run.

UEFA.com reflects on the opening week of UEFA Europa League action by picking out ten of the most interesting facts and figures.

• Exactly half of the 48 teams that took part on matchday one were making their debut appearance in the UEFA Europa League proper (group stage to final). Nine of those 24 sides opened with a win, nine were defeated and the other six registered draws.

• The most impressive newcomers in terms of their margin of victory were Vitória SC, who beat fellow freshmen HNK Rijeka 4-0.

• Debutants Eintracht Frankfurt, ACF Fiorentina and Swansea City AFC also began with 3-0 wins – Swansea doing so away from home at Valencia CF, the sole club among this season's 48 group stage participants to have previously reached a UEFA Europa League semi-final (in 2011/12).

• PSV Eindhoven and FC Rubin Kazan are the only two teams to have appeared in all five UEFA Europa League campaigns.

• PFC Ludogorets Razgrad were the only one of the nine reigning domestic champions in the competition to win their opening fixture. Five of the others lost, while three drew, including Maccabi Tel-Aviv FC and APOEL FC who shared a 0-0 stalemate.

• By drawing at home to APOEL, Maccabi Tel-Aviv remain in search of their first UEFA Europa League victory after seven matches. That is the longest opening winless stretch of any of the 156 sides that have featured in the competition.

• A record number of nations – 27 – are represented in this season's group stage. Six of those countries – Belgium, England, Portugal, Russia, Spain and Ukraine – have three clubs involved, but none of them claimed a clean sweep of victories on matchday day.

• Unusually, the 24 games produced more away wins than home – ten to nine, with five draws – although, conversely, there were many more goals scored by the hosts than the visitors – 31 to 24.

• Three of the 19 victors came from behind, all of them registering 2-1 wins – FC Chornomorets Odesa at GNK Dinamo Zagreb, Trabzonspor AŞ at Apollon Limassol FC, and PAOK FC at home to FC Shakhter Karagandy.

• FC Salzburg striker Jonatan Soriano's hat-trick in the win against IF Elfsborg was the 22nd in the UEFA Europa League and, at 34 minutes, the fourth fastest in the competition. Steven Gerrard's 13-minute treble for Liverpool FC against SSC Napoli in November 2010 remains the quickest.
