Barça breeze past Panionios

FC Barcelona confirmed their place in the third round of the UEFA Cup with a 2-0 win against Panionios NFC - but Sporting Clube de Portugale and Feyenoord both failed to make it through to the 12 December draw.

Early setback
Leading 3-0 after the first leg in Greece three weeks ago, it seemed the Catalan side might be in for a tricky evening as midfield player Luis Enrique was shown the red card after 25 minutes.

Decisive strikes
Eight minutes later, however, Barcelona took the lead, as Argentinian striker Javier Saviola found the net after good work from Mario Álvarez. The game was wrapped up two minutes before half-time, when Luis García scored the home side's second to make the second half a formality.

Sporting shocked
Sporting were knocked out after a 3-0 defeat at home by Gençlerbirligi SK gave the Turkish team a 4-1 aggregate win. Two goals at the end of the first half effectively sealed the win for the away side. After Ali Tandogan's opener and Anderson Polga's own goal, Veysel Cihan killed off any hope five minutes into the second half.

Parma progress
Parma AC completed a comprehensive 9-0 aggregate victory against Austrian side SV Austria Salzburg after scoring five goals without reply in the second leg. Benito Carbone and Tonino Sorrentino scored two apiece at the Stadio Ennio Tardini, with Emanuele Filippini also on target.

'Job done'
Newcastle United FC capitalised on their 3-2 first-leg lead to eliminate FC Basel 1893 4-2 on aggregate after Boris Smiljanic's 14th-minute own goal. "Job done," said Newcastle manager Sir Bobby Robson. "It didn't have to be exotic - they gave us two difficult games."

Feyenoord falter
Feyenoord, meanwhile, found a 2-0 first-leg deficit against FK Teplice too much to overcome, and were knocked out after a 1-1 draw in the Czech Republic. Ferne Snoyl reduced the arrears, but Pavel Horváth's penalty ended the Dutch side's chances.

Dinamo denied
FC Dinamo Bucuresti almost produced a stunning comeback at home against FC Spartak Moskva but had left themselves with too much to do after a 4-0 first-leg loss in Russia. Two goals from Ionel Danciulescu and a Gheorghe Iordache strike brought the Romanian side back into contention, but Dmitri Parfyonov's penalty six minutes from time sealed Spartak's 5-3 aggregate win.

'Great night'
AJ Auxerre made a potentially difficult task at home to FC Utrecht look simple, running out 4-0 winners in France after a goalless first leg. Djibril Cissé scored in each half, with Olivier Kapo and Bonaventure Kalou completing the win. "It's a great night for Ligue 1 because [FC] Sochaux [Montbéliard] won by the same score - both sides showed some great qualities," said Auxerre coach Guy Roux. "You're always happy when you score four goals."

Villarreal hold on
Two UEFA Intertoto Cup winners also edged through, with Villarreal CF progressing 2-1 on aggregate despite a 1-0 defeat at FC Torpedo Moskva, while AC Perugia also reached the third round after a 1-1 draw at FC Aris Thessaloniki earned a 3-1 win overall. Massimo Margiotta virtually sealed the visitors' passage before Nikolaos Papadopoulos equalised.

Two for Tiago
Two first-half goals from Tiago gave SL Benfica a 2-0 win at Molde FK that completed a 5-1 victory over the two games, while RCD Mallorca progressed 3-1 after a 1-1 draw against FC København. Alejandro Campano put the home side in front, before Martin Albrechtsen equalised late on for København. Finally, Ukrainian outfit FC Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk also reached the third round, eliminating NK Dinamo Zagreb 3-1 on aggregate after drawing the second leg at home 1-1.
