Six-month contract
Benfica, who are third in the SuperLiga, have signed Thornton on a free transfer from Chicago Fire. The 30-year-old agreed a six-month contract with the option of a further 12 months. "Benfica is a very big club," said Thornton. "If things work for me, this could be a great opportunity."
Capped eight times
Thornton, capped eight times by the US, had been at Chicago Fire since 1998, the year he was voted best goalkeeper in Major League Soccer. He has previously played for New York/New Jersey MetroStars. Benfica meet Norway's Rosenborg BK in the UEFA Cup third round later this month.
