City keep Vieira for another year

Patrick Vieira will be on board for Manchester City FC's UEFA Europa League campaign after the midfielder took up the option of a one-year extension to his contract at Eastlands.

Manchester City FC manager Roberto Mancini will have Patrick Vieira at his disposal for next season's UEFA Europa League campaign after the midfielder extended his six-month stay at the club by a further season.

Vieira, who played under Mancini at FC Internazionale Milano, became the Italian's first signing at City when he penned a short-term deal during the January transfer window. The former Arsenal FC midfielder and France captain, 33, made 13 league appearances for Blues, his only goal coming in a 6-1 victory against Burnley FC on 3 April. City will go into next term's UEFA Europa League play-offs after finishing fifth in the Premier League.

Mancini has already made one summer acquisition after the club last week announced the arrival of German international defender Jerome Boateng on a five-year deal from Hamburger SV.
