Valeri Gazzaev has resigned as coach of FC Dynamo Kyiv less than 24 hours after the Ukrainian club lost 2-0 to UEFA Europa League rivals FC Sheriff in Moldova.
A statement on the Dynamo website said: "The club president [Igor Surkis] has thanked the coach for his efforts and wished him luck for the rest of his career." The 56-year-old, who guided the capital outfit to the 2009 Ukrainian Super Cup after taking over in July last year, initially tendered his resignation following a 2-2 home draw with FC BATE Borisov on Matchday 1 last month, only for Surkis to persuade him to remain.
Gazzaev leaves the White and Blues bottom of Group E but in second place in the Ukrainian Premier League, two points behind Sunday's opponents FC Shakhtar Donetsk. Oleh Luzhny, who made 240 league appearances for Dynamo as a defender, will be in charge for the trip to the Donbass Arena. AZ Alkmaar provide Dynamo's next European opposition on 21 October.
