Bayer 04 Leverkusen will be without Finnish international Sami Hyypiä for several weeks after the central defender suffered an ankle injury.

The 37-year-old tore ligaments in his left ankle in training ahead of last Thursday's goalless draw at Aris Thessaloniki FC in UEFA Europa League Group B. The full extent of the problem was only made clear on Sunday when scans were carried out following the team's return from Greece.

Hyypiä will not undergo surgery, with the injury being treated conventionally. It is not known for how long the former Liverpool FC centre-back will be sidelined, although Leverkusen's press release predicted an absence of "several weeks".

Group B leaders Leverkusen are next in UEFA Europa League action at home to Aris on 4 November.
