Kuiper injury jinx continues

FC Twente defender Nicky Kuiper has suffered cruciate ligament damage in his left knee for the second time in less than a year and is now expected to miss the remainder of the season.

FC Twente defender Nicky Kuiper is set for another long absence after the 21-year-old reinjured his left knee on Saturday during training in La Manga, Spain, where the Dutch club are preparing for the second half of the season.

After flying back to Enschede, the left-back underwent an MRI scan on Monday which revealed torn cruciate ligaments and confirmed surgery will be required. "Nicky Kuiper will be unavailable for a long time," a club statement read, with the defender likely to will miss the remainder of the 2010/11 campaign.

Kuiper had only recently returned to training after a similar injury in October and prior to that had been sidelined from April until late September after meniscus surgery on his right knee. FC Twente face FC Rubin Kazan in the UEFA Europa League round of 32, travelling to Russia for the first leg on 17 February with the return a week later.
