Villarreal CF have moved quickly to replace injured defender Ángel López by signing former Brazilian international Cicinho on loan from AS Roma until the end of the season.
An option to make the move for the 30-year-old right-back permanent in the summer is included in the agreement between the clubs. The Yellow Submarine suffered a blow earlier this week with the news that their regular right-sided defender, López, would be out for six months after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee last weekend.
Cicinho arrives at El Madrigal having already enjoyed success in Spain with Real Madrid CF, a two-year stint in the capital yielding a Liga title in 2006/07. The former Botafogo FR and São Paulo FC player has scored three goals in 60 Serie A appearances for Roma, six of which he has made this term.
Villarreal face SSC Napoli in the UEFA Europa League round of 32, with the first leg in Naples on 17 February and the return taking place a week later.
