Knee surgery robs Benfica of Rúben Amorim

SL Benfica will have to do without Rúben Amorim for their round of 32 tie against VfB Stuttgart – and conceivably much longer – after the midfielder had an operation on both his knees.

SL Benfica midfielder Rúben Amorim will miss the round of 32 tie against VfB Stuttgart after undergoing surgery to both his knees on Tuesday.

The 25-year-old Portuguese international had a successful operation to deal with a persistent problem in his knees and is certain to miss both legs against Stuttgart. Benfica have not said how long he will be sidelined for, but it has been reported he may miss the remainder of the season.

Rúben Amorim has made 11 Liga appearances this term and also played in two UEFA Champions League group stage games. The Eagles host Stuttgart in the UEFA Europa League round of 32 on 17 February and travel to Germany – where the Lisbon club have never won in 17 attempts – a week later.
