SL Benfica have increased their defensive options with the signing of 19-year-old left-back Lionel Carole from FC Nantes for an undisclosed fee.

Carole, who made his professional debut for the Ligue 2 team at the start of the season, has agreed a five-and-a-half year deal with the Eagles. "I don't speak Portuguese but I can tell you that it's an enormous pleasure to represent a club like Benfica," said Carole, who made 14 league appearances in the first half of the campaign.

Carole is Benfica's second defensive acquisition of the transfer window, having previously signed Jardel Vieira from SC Olhanense. Second in the Portuguese Liga, 11 points behind FC Porto, Benfica meet VfB Stuttgart in the UEFA Europa League round of 32 on 17 and 24 February.
