Debutants dream, favourites stand firm

Rosenborg BK had a torrid time in Almaty but held firm to join FC Twente, APOEL FC, FC Viktoria Plzeň and a pair of debutants in the UEFA Europa League third qualifying round.

Despite first-leg hiccups hinting at second-round upsets, the favourites generally stood firm to reach the UEFA Europa League third qualifying round, and were joined by a pair of debutants.

The story of the day was to be found in Almaty, where Daniel Örlund's penalty save and Bořek Dočkal's 94th-minute winner rescued nine-man Rosenborg BK from elimination at the hands of FC Ordabasy Shymkent. The Kazakhstani side surprised many with their 2-2 comeback draw in last week's first leg, and Gueye Mansour (32) had Rosenborg reeling again. Daniel Fredheim Holm (67) equalised and, heading out on away goals, Rosenborg's predicament worsened as Simen Wangberg was sent off on 77 minutes. Örlund denied Ordabasy captain Artem Kasyanov from the resulting spot kick, however, and despite Rade Prica's dismissal for a second yellow card, a buoyed Rosenborg stole a 4-3 aggregate win.

Like Rosenborg, FC Twente had struggled to a first-leg draw against FC Inter Turku. Their reunion was, in contrast, a formality. Leroy Fer and Nacer Chadli both struck twice, while Glynor Plet hit his fourth of the campaign as Steve McClaren's men eased into the next round with a 6-1 aggregate win. Compatriots Vitesse, having led four times in a 4-4 first-leg draw against Lokomotiv Plovdiv 1936, also proved that their opening stalemate was a fluke, beating their opponents 3-1 – Wilfried Bony again on the scoresheet.

One of the night's eye-catching stories was debutants ND Mura 05 ousting PFC CSKA Sofia, securing a 1-1 draw with 14 minutes to go to qualify on away goals – a rule that also proved the salvation of KuPS Kuopio, Videoton FC, FK Zeta and SV Ried. Another newcomer, Greece's Asteras Tripolis FC, also progressed in dramatic fashion, beating İnter Bakı PİK on penalties.

Last season's UEFA Champions League contenders, APOEL FC and FC Viktoria Plzeň, progressed comfortably at the expense of FK Senica and FC Metalurgi Rustavi respectively, while HNK Hajduk Split saw off Skonto FC to earn a third round meeting with FC Internazionale Milano. Having completed their rout of Portadown FC, NK Slaven Koprivnica will take on last year's runners-up Athletic Club in the next stage.

Elsewhere, IF Elfsborg turned around a first-leg defeat with a 2-0 win to oust FC Dacia Chisinau, Belarusians FC Gomel will face Liverpool FC in the next round after eliminating FK Renova, while a Samuel Eto'o double helped FC Anzhi Makhachkala cruise past Budapest Honvéd FC 5-0 on aggregate.

Third qualifying round matches will be played on the next two Thursdays, 2 and 9 August, with the winners going into the play-off draw on 10 August.
