Liverpool FC expect Fabio Borini to be sidelined for three months after confirming that the forward requires surgery on a fractured bone in his right foot.
The 21-year-old originally sustained the injury during the Reds' 2-1 home defeat by Manchester United FC on 23 September, but further aggravated it last week while preparing for the first leg of Italy's UEFA European Under-21 Championship play-off against Sweden.
The setback means manager Brendan Rodgers has only one fit senior striker, Luis Suárez, at his disposal for the remainder of the UEFA Europa League group stage, which has four matches left to run. Borini has scored just once for the Anfield club following his July transfer from AS Roma.
Liverpool resume their Group A campaign next Thursday with a home game against FC Anji Makhachkala.
