UEFA Europa League contenders Bayer 04 Leverkusen have signed free agent Sebastian Boenisch with immediate effect to help counter their current injury woes.

The versatile defender, who was with SV Werder Bremen until the end of last season, has signed for the Werkself until the end of the current campaign. Leverkusen's general manager Wolfgang Holzhäuser said: "We have adequately reacted to the injuries of recent days and weeks. Sebastian Boenisch is an experienced Bundesliga player who will help us immediately."

Following injuries to Michal Kadlec and Daniel Schwaab, the 25-year-old Boenisch will bolster coach Sascha Lewandowski's defensive options. "This is a huge chance for me," said the Polish international. "I am highly motivated and will do everything to make sure the club reach their goals."

Leverkusen currently top UEFA Europa League Group K with two victories and one draw from the opening three matches, and will host SK Rapid Wien on matchday four on Thursday.
