AS Saint-Étienne defender Paul Baysse will have to wait at least six months to make his debut for the Ligue 1 side because of a knee injury.

A summer recruit from Stade Brestois 29, Baysse suffered an anterior cruciate ligament tear while playing in a friendly against Grenoble Foot 38 on Saturday. The club have since confirmed that the 25-year-old requires an operation which is likely to rule him out until well into 2014. Baysse made 18 top-flight appearances for Brest last season, scoring twice.

St-Etienne, who opened their league campaign with a 1-0 victory at AC Ajaccio at the weekend, will face Danish team Esbjerg fB in the UEFA Europa League play-offs. The first leg is scheduled for 22 August, with the return in France the following Thursday.
