Xavi Torres could be out for the rest of the season after suffering a torn right Achilles tendon during Real Betis Balompié's final UEFA Europa League group stage game.
The 27-year-old former Getafe CF midfielder was forced off 57 minutes into Thursday's 0-0 home draw with HNK Rijeka that condemned already qualified Betis to second place behind Olympique Lyonnais in Group I. After spending the night in hospital, Torres will undergo surgery on Friday and will be sidelined for four to five months.
Recently appointed coach Juan Carlos Garrido, whose team will discover their round of 32 opponents on Monday, said: "He was making a big effort and this is the bad news of the night. It is another problem to overcome; we must be united in these situations. We must help Xavi Torres as much as possible."
