Eintracht Frankfurt have strengthened ahead of their UEFA Europa League round of 32 tie against FC Porto with the signing of free agent Alexander Madlung.
The Bundesliga side announced on Thursday evening that the 31-year-old has signed a performance-based contract running until 30 June 2015. "Alexander is an experienced defender and now we have more alternatives in the back four," said sporting director Bruno Hübner.
Madlung had been without a club since leaving VfL Wolfsburg at the end of last season. Capped twice by Germany, he won the league title with the Lower Saxony outfit in 2008/09. Madlung started his career with Hertha BSC Berlin, making 81 league appearances for the capital team between 2002 and 2006.
His new employers are 15th in the Bundesliga and visit Porto for the first leg of their European assignment on 20 February.
