Eduardo Salvio will miss the remainder of SL Benfica's season after 'Mr Europa League' underwent surgery to treat a broken arm suffered in a Liga game on Sunday.

The 23-year-old winger broke his left forearm in a clash with Oumar Diakité moments before half-time in Sunday's 2-0 win against SC Olhanense, a victory which confirmed Benfica as Portuguese champions. He will now be out of action for the rest of the season, having missed almost six months of the campaign already after suffering a knee injury in a game against Sporting Clube de Portugal on 31 August 2013.

Salvio twice won the UEFA Europa League as a Club Atlético de Madrid player, and then featured in last season's final with Benfica; his 39 appearances since the competition took on its new identity in 2009 is a UEFA Europa League record. He joins Sílvio among the long-term absentees at Benfica, with the defender having broken his leg in the club's UEFA Europa League quarter-final decider against AZ Alkmaar.
