Butt secures Newcastle switch

Midfield player Nicky Butt has left Manchester United FC and completed his move to Newcastle United FC.

Four-year contract
The 29-year-old England international left United's tour of the United States to discuss personal terms with Newcastle earlier this week and the deal, for an as yet undisclosed fee, was confirmed this morning. He has signed a four-year contract and will be presented to the media tomorrow.

Six league titles
Butt emerged from United's successful 1992 youth team alongside David Beckham, Paul Scholes and the Neville brothers to play nearly 400 matches for the club. He won six league championships and was in the side that beat FC Bayern München in the 1999 UEFA Champions League final.

Injury problems
However, Butt lost his place at Old Trafford last season following injury problems. An England regular at the 2002 FIFA World Cup, he was included in their UEFA EURO 2004™ squad but did not add to his 35 international caps due to a knee injury. His signing should fill the gap in Newcastle's squad left by the departure of the experienced Gary Speed for Bolton Wanderers FC.
