Striker Jonatan Soriano has extended his contract with FC Salzburg by 12 months until summer 2018.

The 29-year-old's improved terms include an option for a further season but no release clause. The prolific Spaniard has scored 112 goals in 126 appearances for Salzburg in all competitions since his arrival from FC Barcelona B in January 2012. He was the top marksman in the 2013/14 Austrian Bundesliga and UEFA Europa League with 31 and eight goals respectively.

"I have always maintained how at home I feel in Salzburg and that I don't intend to leave," said the team captain from a training camp in Doha, Qatar. "I'm pleased with the trust the club put in me and I'm convinced we can continue to compete at a high level in the future."

Salzburg sporting director Ralf Rangnick added: "We are delighted to have been able to extend Jonatan Soriano's deal early on. He has committed to Salzburg and as a leading player in this team he has sent a signal to others. With his experience and the threat he poses in front of goal, he is a very important player for us, especially given our young side."

The former RCD Espanyol and Albacete Balompié forward's decision to pledge his future to Salzburg comes towards the end of a transfer window in which they have lost Alan – the eight-goal top scorer in the UEFA Europa League group stage – to China's Guangzhou Evergrande FC and key midfielder Kevin Kampl to Borussia Dortmund.

Soriano will return to Spain when Salzburg, eight points clear in Austria, play Villarreal CF in their UEFA Europa League round of 32 first leg on 19 February.
