• Having made history already by providing a record five participants in the UEFA Europa League round of 32, Italy achieved a clean sweep of victories on Thursday night to send the nation's entire task force – ACF Fiorentina, FC Internazionale Milano, SSC Napoli, AS Roma and Torino FC – through to the last 16. In the five previous seasons of the competition no country had ever taken more than three clubs into the second round of the knockout phase.

• Those five successful qualifications for Serie A sides mean that Italy has now supplied more clubs to the UEFA Europa League round of 16 than any other nation except Spain – 12 teams each. There has yet, however, to be an Italian finalist, let alone a winner.

• Spain are one of three countries with two clubs still active in this season's competition, the others being Russia and Ukraine, who both had a 100% success rate in the round of 32. The last 16 is completed by one side apiece from Belgium, England, Germany, the Netherlands and Turkey.

• The 2014/15 campaign is the first, therefore, in which Portugal, a country with four previous finalists, has not had representation in the round of 16. England and Spain are the only two nations that have been represented at this stage of the competition in each of its six seasons.

• Although Sporting Clube de Portugal were eliminated after a 0-0 draw at home to VfL Wolfsburg, they departed with their unbeaten home record in the competition intact. The Lisbon team have avoided defeat in all 20 of their home games in the UEFA Europa League, a record sequence.

• FC Zenit also maintained an impressive home record with their 3-0 triumph over PSV Eindhoven. It was their eighth win out of eight on home turf in the UEFA Europa League and puts the Russian outfit just two behind the competition's joint record holders for consecutive home victories – Club Atlético de Madrid and SL Benfica.

• The match in St Petersburg was PSV's 50th in the UEFA Europa League, making them the first side to reach that milestone. The two clubs with the next highest number of games played are Sporting and FC Salzburg with 40 apiece.

• In losing 3-0 at Zenit, PSV have now conceded more goals in the competition than any other team – 54, one ahead of FC Steaua Bucureşti. On the positive side, they are also the tournament's highest scorers, with 72 goals, three more than Salzburg.

• In defeating Trabzonspor AŞ 1-0 at home, Napoli set a new competition record by registering their fifth straight clean sheet. Previously they were one of eight clubs on four.

• Zenit are through to the round of 16 for the third time, the same number as Valencia CF. Only Benfica, with four appearances, have participated more often at that stage of the tournament.

• Just six of the teams in the upcoming round of 16 have never previously featured at this stage of the UEFA Europa League – Club Brugge KV, FC Dinamo Moskva, FC Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk, Everton FC, Roma and Torino.

• Napoli, Fiorentina and holders Sevilla FC are the only sides through to the last 16 who were also involved at the same juncture last season.

• Tottenham Hotspur FC's exit means that no club has ever contested the UEFA Europa League round of 16 three years running.

 • The penalty shoot-out between Beşiktaş JK and Liverpool FC, which the Turkish team won 5-4, was just the fifth in the UEFA Europa League, group stage to final. It was the first, however, in which the winners converted all five of their designated spot kicks.

• The Beşiktaş-Liverpool tie was the only one of the 16 to go to extra time, and for the first time not one of the round of 32 ties was decided on the away goals rule.

• Romelu Lukaku's five goals over the two legs of Everton's 7-2 victory over BSC Young Boys amounted to the most scored by a player in a UEFA Europa League round of 32 tie. It also equalled the highest number scored in a knockout phase tie, matching Radamel Falcao's five for FC Porto in the 2010/11 semi-final against Villarreal CF.
