Pick of the action

Brøndby IF (DEN) 9-0 AC Juvenes/Dogana (SMR)
Swedish international Johan Elmander scored two as the Danish side recorded their largest ever win in UEFA competition. Substitute Elbasan Rashani also scored a pair in the second-half for the 1990/91 semi-finalists who now seem certain to face one of FK Atlantas Klaipėda or PFC Beroe Stara Zagora in the second round.

Europa FC (GIB) 0-6 ŠK Slovan Bratislava (SVK)
The first hat-trick of the season came from Slovakian Karol Mészáros who got his side's first three in a dominant success in the Victoria Stadium. The 21-year-old's personal tally was completed by the 31st minute before Slobodan Simović, Samuel Štefánik and Tamás Priskin added to the total for the side who featured in last season's group stage.

VPS Vaasa (FIN) 2-2 AIK Solna (SWE)
Sweden's UEFA European Under-21 Championship winning goalkeeper Patrick Carlgren came back to earth with a bump after Tuesday's heroics. The man who saved two penalties in the final victory against Portugal lasted just 29 minutes for the visitors in Finland before being forced off with a knee injury. Admir Ćatović and Jordan Seabrook then put the hosts – who sacked their coach just three days earlier – two up before Nabil Bahoui's pair for AIK left things delicately poised.

One of only two second-tier sides in the opening round – alongside Go Ahead Eagles – the Irish team nevertheless recorded a first-leg lead against the side from Luxembourg. Making their debut in the competition, the hosts secured a narrow lead in the tie thanks to 19-year-old Ryan Swan's winner in first-half added time.

FC Sheriff (MDA) 0-3 Odds BK (NOR)
Three goals in the opening 30 minutes put Dag-Eilev Fagermo's Norwegian outfit well on track to navigate their way past the 2013/14 group stage contenders. Chukwuma Akabueze got the scoring under way just two minutes in before Frode Johnsen and Steffen Hagen left the side within touching distance of a tie with FC Progrès Niederkorn or Shamrock Rovers FC.

Strømsgodset IF (NOR) 3-1 FK Partizani (ALB)
Hoping to make the group stage for the first time, the hosts are well placed to make the next stage after Lars-Christopher Vilsvik's double. The 26-year-old put the Norwegian team ahead on 21 minutes before Marvin Ogunjimi doubled the lead. Atrit Fazliu halved the deficit before Vilsvik restored it shortly after to take the two-goal advantage to Albania next week.

FK Trakai (LTU) 3-0 HB Tórshavn (FRO)
The hosts took to European football like a duck to water on their continental debut. Aleksandr Bychenok and David Arshakyan put Valdas Urbonas' men two up and they were helped by the 62nd-minute dismissal of Alex, before Ronald Solomin ensured the Lithuanian side take a three-goal advantage to the Faroe Islands.

Newtown AFC (WAL) 2-1 Valletta FC (MLT)
Late drama at Latham Park saw the Welsh Cup runners-up clinch their first ever win in Europe. Their two previous continental adventures failed to bring a victory but Jason Oswell got the winner in the 91st minute to defeat Paul Zammit's side, who lost captain Ian Azzopardi to a red card five minutes before full-time.

FK Crvena zvezda (SRB) 0-2 FC Kairat Almaty (KAZ)
The 1991 European champions look set to fall at the first hurdle this time around after an early red card hit them hard. Savo Pavićević was dismissed just three minutes in and the Kazakh visitors took full advantage. Gerard Gohou and Yermek Kuantayev got the goals to establish a potentially vital first-leg lead.
