What to watch out for in the UEFA Europa League

Wayne Rooney and Francesco Totti are approaching career milestones, Inter's Frank de Boer is under pressure and Genk have a wonderkid on their hands as UEFA.com surveys matchday three.

Highlights: Young Boys 0-1 Olympiacos

Rooney milestone approaching
Like it or not, United and Fenerbahçe are inextricably linked. In 1996, Elvir Bolić's goal for the Turkish side handed the Red Devils their first ever European home defeat. Eight years later Wayne Rooney hit a hat-trick against the Yellow Canaries on his European debut. "It couldn't have gone any better," he later told UEFA.com. Now 30, Rooney is within a goal of matching Ruud van Nistelrooy's record of 38 in Europe for United. Will Fenerbahçe witness another piece of Old Trafford history on matchday three?

Arveladze's AZ comeback
Shota Arveladze's most trophy-laden years came with Ajax and Rangers, but his spell at AZ from 2005–07 was no afterthought. The then 30-something striker scored plenty as the club made it through two UEFA Cup group stages under Louis van Gaal, later returning to work as his old boss's assistant, saying: "Who gets the chance to get free lessons from one of the best coaches in the world?" He will hope to show what he learned when his current club, Maccabi Tel-Aviv, visit the Netherlands.

Totti, Cafu, Florenzi: Watch five great Roma goals

Ton up for Totti
It is a season of signs and wonders for Roma captain Francesco Totti, who turned 40 on 27 September, and underlined how little age has diminished his faculties by having a hand in three of his team's four goals against Astra two days later. Should he feature at home to Austria Wien, the one-club wonder will take his tally to 100 in UEFA competitions. His former Roma team-mate Sinisa Mihajlović said of him: "Totti's the best Italian player of the past 25 years – that's why he's still playing."

Genk's striking prodigy
"He's so quick, it's not normal," Ronald de Boer said of Jamaican winger Leon Bailey when he saw him train in 2013. "What are his weaknesses? I couldn't tell you." Now reportedly commanding the attention of Manchester United scouts, the 19-year-old is the group stage's joint-top scorer with three goals – alongside Ludogorets' Joãozinho and Zenit's Aleksandr Kokorin. The Genk prodigy may not find it easy against resilient Athletic, yet expect crazy putative transfer figures to be bandied about if the goals keep flowing.

Ajax's Celta nemesis
Celta and Ajax last met in the 2003/04 UEFA Champions League group stage, when a fresh-faced Zlatan Ibrahimović scored in a 1-0 Ajax home win before they lost 3-2 at Miguel Ángel Lotina's side. The personnel are much changed now, though one name Ajax fans will recognise is John Guidetti, who netted a hat-trick for Feyenoord in a 4-2 victory over the Amsterdammers in January 2012. Ajax reportedly tried to sign the Sweden forward in 2014 but were rebuffed due to his loyalty to their Rotterdam rivals.

De Boer with a sore head
Under fire after some wobbly results in his first months in charge, Inter boss Frank de Boer needs a lift as his team welcome Southampton – one of three clubs, together with Shakhtar Donetsk and Beer-Sheva, yet to concede in this group stage. Bottom of Group K with zero points, the Nerazzurri have frustrated their coach with some slipshod displays. "Europe is not simple," the Dutchman said. "We have to play every game as if it's a derby and so far we haven't done that." Will the Saints be their salvation?
