Victors dream of trophy triumph

The UEFA Cup group stage is today firing the imagination of the 40 clubs that negotiated the first round.

Looking forward
In all, 40 sides will be in the hat for next Tuesday's draw with all the clubs guaranteed another four matches in the competition. Among them will be 2002 winners Feyenoord, with coach Ruud Gullit just pleased to just be in contention. "I'll wait and see what will happen for us on Tuesday," he said. uefa.com rounds up more of the post-match reaction.

Hapoel Bnei Sakhnin FC 1-5 Newcastle United FC (Newcastle win 7-1 on aggregate)
It's vitally important for the club, for individuals and for the fans. We had a great [UEFA Cup] run last year and came within one match of the final, so I hope we can go one better this year. We're not greedy here at Newcastle, we'll take any trophy. (Alan Shearer, Newcastle captain)

FC Basel 1893 2-0 FC Terek Grozny
(Basel win 3-1 on aggregate)

This team has a future and I hope we can go on making an impact both in domestic and European action. Of course, I hope we will have attractive opponents [in the group stage]. It was also a very important win because the whole of Switzerland was watching us but first, it's a win for the supporters of our team. (Christian Gross, Basel coach)

PFC CSKA Sofia 2-2 FC Steaua Bucuresti
(Steaua win 4-3 on aggregate)

I am more than happy that we managed to score four goals in two games against CSKA, a team that has conceded just three goals in seven league matches. Now we are looking forward to the group stage and I am sure we can show even more. (Walter Zenga, Steaua coach)

Rangers FC 1-0 CS Marítimo
(1-1 on aggregate, Rangers win on penalties)

I told the players not to fear failure. It is a fine line in football. We are rebuilding here and if we can strengthen the team in January then we will get stronger. This result will bring us a lot of confidence. It is a great night for Scottish football. (Alex McLeish, Rangers coach)

SK Rapid Wien 0-0 Sporting Clube de Portugal
(Sporting win 2-0 on aggregate)

We deserve to go through to the group stage, although we did not control the match the way we wanted. We proved to be a more mature team, with good ball possession. (José Peseiro, Sporting coach)

FHK Liepajas Metalurgs 0-4 FC Schalke 04
(Schalke win 9-1 on aggregate)

The most important thing for me was to see the players in action in a competitive match because I don't know all of them yet. It was great to keep a clean sheet and all in all I think the result was expected and didn't come as a big surprise to anyone. But it was great to be back in the dug-out. (Ralf Rangnick, Schalke coach)

SK Sigma Olomouc 2-3 Real Zaragoza
(Zaragoza win 4-2 on aggregate)

Sigma made our life very difficult, particularly during the first half but they overexerted themselves and ran out of steam later on. By the second half we had the game under control and were the superior side. (Víctor Muñoz, Zaragoza coach)

Lille OSC 2-0 Shelbourne FC
(Lille win 4-2 on aggregate)
We approached this game exactly as we did for the first leg, except that, this time, we managed to keep our control and stay focused. Our aim was to enter the group stage. We've done it. (Claude Puel, Lille coach)
