One-man title defences: can Mkhitaryan match Falcao?

Following his move from Manchester United to Arsenal, Henrikh Mkhitaryan has the opportunity to add to his collection of UEFA Europa League winners' medals.

Should the Gunners elect to register him for the second part of their campaign, the 29-year-old has the chance to become only the second player to win the competition in consecutive seasons with two different clubs.

Radamel Falcao set the precedent, scoring the only goal for Porto in their 2010 decider against Braga in Dublin before striking twice for Atlético Madrid the following season as they beat Athletic Club 3-0 in Bucharest.

Now at Monaco, the Colombian remains the only player to score for two clubs in successive UEFA competition final victories.

His achievement of winning back-to-back editions of a UEFA competition with different clubs is not unique though – three players (or arguably four) managed to win successive editions of the UEFA Champions League with different sides: Marcel Desailly (Marseille 1993, AC Milan 1994), Paulo Sousa (Juventus 1996, Borussia Dortmund 1997) and Samuel Eto'o (Barcelona 2009, Internazionale Milano 2010).

The situation of Gerard Piqué is more debatable. He did not feature in Manchester United's 2008 final triumph against Chelsea in Moscow (having played in three games earlier in the campaign) but started the following year as his new team, Barcelona, beat the Red Devils in the 2009 decider.
