Hopefuls optimistic after draw

The UEFA Cup quarter-final draw in Nyon threw up a number of intriguing ties. uefa.com collects the reaction.

FC Steaua Bucuresti-Villarreal CF v AZ Alkmaar
First, we have to qualify against Villarreal. But if we do, we have a good chance because Alkmaar seem beatable even though we respect them. But let's not look too far ahead. Dorinel Munteanu, Steaua midfielder

Whoever gets through on Sunday will meet Alkmaar, but we have an important match to play before we can even think about the quarter-finals. For me, Newcastle are the strongest side left in the competition, and Sporting have also been impressive. Most of the ties from now onwards will be very close with very little between the teams. Santiago Cazorla, Villarreal midfielder

I certainly did not want to get Newcastle or Austria Wien, and now we have to wait and see the result of the match between Villarreal and Steaua - I imagine Villarreal will win having drawn the first leg 0-0 away from home. The Spanish side are very strong, they currently occupy a [UEFA] Champions League qualification spot in the Primera División. But when you are in the last eight, you are among the strongest teams in Europe. All in all, we should not be unhappy with this draw. Co Adriaanse, Alkmaar coach

PFC CSKA Moskva v AJ Auxerre
We will be deciding where to play this fixure upon our return from Tomsk from a league match. I don't rule out playing in Krasnodar again, because of the excellent atmosphere there during two of our UEFA Cup matches, against [SL] Benfica and [FK] Partizan. Eugeni Giner, CSKA president

CSKA are a top-class side with great players. They have spent the last three weeks or so at training camps in southern Europe. I'm happy we're at home in the second leg, it's good for our fans. But first we have a formidable task to stay in the tie during the first leg. Guy Roux, Auxerre coach

Newcastle United FC v Sporting Clube de Portugal
We played Sporting in the group stage, which was the only game in the competition we've not won. I've been at Newcastle for three decades, seen numerous managers, and the players and fans are desperate to see a trophy at St James' Park. Let's hope we can do it this year. We'd like to see Alan Shearer break Jackie Milburn's goalscoring record for the club and do it in the final in Lisbon. Freddy Shepherd, Newcastle chairman

This is a unique opportunity for us to play the final in our stadium. We've done all we can in order to get there. A club like Sporting always play to win and we all know that the final will take place in Lisbon so we are very confident. Eurico Gomes, Sporting club secretary

FK Austria Wien v Parma FC
Parma are a great team. We are playing the first match at home, and that's great for us too. I would rate our chances of winning at 50/50. In the quarter-finals all eight teams are more or less equal. Lars Söndergaard, Austria coach

It is impossible to say if it is a good draw for us or a bad one. At this stage every team is very strong. If they have reached the quarter-finals, they must have quality. I'm happy because Austria is not so far away - it would have been more difficult to travel to Moscow. Vienna is a lovely city and we are happy to go there. We could never imagine getting as far as we are in the UEFA Cup, but now we want to go all the way and win the trophy for the third time. Pietro Carmignani, Parma coach
