Vermezovic parts with Partizan

Vladimir Vermezovic has resigned as coach of FK Partizan in the wake of the side's disappointing UEFA Cup first round exit by Maccabi Petach-Tikva FC.

Double blow
Partizan surrendered a two-goal first-leg advantage in Israel on Thursday, eventually losing 5-2, and it has proved the final straw for Vermezovic, who had already overseen the team's elimination from the UEFA Champions League at the hands of FC Artmedia Bratislava. His former assistants Blagoje Paunović and Zvonko Varga will take temporary charge for today's Super Liga match against FK Kula Hajduk in Belgrade.

Impressive debut campaign
A former Partizan defender, Vermezovic replaced Lothar Matthäus at the helm in January 2004, leading the club to the league title in his debut season. The Belgrade outfit also enjoyed an impressive UEFA Cup run, reaching the quarter-finals before they were knocked-out by eventual winners PFC CSKA Moskva, but with hopes ended of bettering that performance, Vermezovic tended his resignation. Partizan's executive committee will meet tomorrow to discuss a permanent replacement.
