López joins Celta injury list

RC Celta de Vigo striker Gustavo López has been sidelined for a month with a leg strain.

RC Celta de Vigo have added striker Gustavo López to their growing injury list ahead of the second leg of their UEFA Cup first-round tie with Odense BK after the Argentinian was sidelined for a month with a leg strain.

Double blow
López was forced to leave the pitch after only 30 minutes of Sunday’s 2-2 league draw against Málaga CF and will now miss the next four weeks. In a double blow, central defender Sergio Fernández was admitted to hospital with abdominal pains and subsequent tests determined that it was appendicitis. He was operated on immediately and will also be sidelined for the next month.

Defensive worries
Coach Miguel Angel Lotina's defensive options were further reduced when Sebastián Méndez limped out of training ahead of the trip to Denmark with a muscle problem. Celta take with them a 2-0 lead from the first leg.

Flying start
The Galician side, who trail Spanish league leaders Valencia CF on goal difference after a flying start to the season, now have only two fit central defenders in Fernando Cáceres and Eduardo Berizzo. Lotina said: "No one could imagine we would have so many problems especially when we are doing so well in the league."
