The club's sporting director Andreas Müller said: "Darío is one of the best defenders in the Bundesliga and has performed very consistently this season. He is a very popular and well-respected figure within the team."

Rodríguez, who joined from CA Peñarol in 2002, said he wanted a return to the UEFA Champions League after Schalke failed to escape the group stage. "We have one big aim for the Bundesliga season - to qualify for the Champions League again."
