Schalke lose Varela for Levski

FC Schalke 04 will be unable to call on Gustavo Varela against PFC Levski Sofia as the Uruguayan has returned to his homeland following a family bereavement.

FC Schalke 04 will be unable to call on attacking midfielder player Gustavo Varela in the second leg of their UEFA Cup quarter-final against PFC Levski Sofia on Thursday as the Uruguayan has returned to his homeland following a family bereavement.

Telling impact
The 27-year-old made a telling impact after coming on as a half-time substitute during last week's first leg in Bulgaria, sweeping his side level three minutes later to kick-start a comeback which would see Schalke win 3-1. Varela is expected to return to Gelsenkirchen from Montevideo early next week, ruling him out of this weekend's Bundesliga match at MSV Duisburg too.
