Seventy sides set sights on success

Sevilla FC's UEFA Cup triumph may be beyond them but 70 clubs will view Friday's 2006/07 first qualifying round draw, from 13.30CET, as a chance for glory.

Seventy clubs from across Europe will be involved when the draw for the first qualifying round of the 2006/07 UEFA Cup takes place in Nyon from 13.30CET on Friday.

Opening round
The 70 clubs have been split into three geographical seeding groups - Northern, Southern-Mediterranean and Central-East. Teams from the same country cannot be drawn together. The 35 winners of these matches, to be played over two legs on 13 and 27 July, will progress to the second qualifying round where they will be joined by a further 29 sides, including the eleven UEFA Intertoto Cup winners. This draw will be made in Nyon on 28 July.

Big names
The 32 survivors of the second qualifying round on 10 and 24 August will advance to the first round proper, to be staged over two legs on 14 and 28 September, where 48 other clubs will lie in wait, including holders Sevilla FC and the 16 teams eliminated in the third qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League. The first-round winners will participate in the UEFA Cup group stage. The final of the 2006/07 UEFA Cup will be held in Glasgow. For a full list of the competing sides, click here.
