Velasco takes free ride to Espanyol

Former Spanish international full-back Juan Velasco is joining Copa del Rey holders RCD Espanyol after leaving Club Atlético de Madrid as a free agent.

The 29-year-old has signed a one-year contract with the Barcelona-based team following two seasons in the capital with Atlético. Velasco had previously enjoyed long spells with RC Celta de Vigo - where he made 134 league appearances over five campaigns - and his hometown club Sevilla FC. Velasco's new employers take on Slovakian side FC Artmedia in the UEFA Cup first round on 14 and 28 September.
