Tottenham wait on winger Lennon

England winger Aaron Lennon is expected to miss Tottenham Hotspur FC's UEFA Cup opener after picking up a knee injury which could require surgery.

England winger Aaron Lennon is expected to miss Tottenham Hotspur FC's return to the UEFA Cup after picking up a knee injury which could require surgery.

Training injury
Lennon, who played in both of England's recent UEFA EURO 2008™ qualifying victories against Andorra and F.Y.R. Macedonia, missed last night's 1-0 defeat at Manchester United FC after getting injured in training on Friday. "Maybe he needs an operation but maybe we'll give him another week's rest because it's only a small tear in his cartilage, so hopefully it will be okay," said Tottenham manager Martin Jol.

'Disappointment'
"It's a disappointment but we played without him in pre-season and others did well, so I'm confident we can play with the other players and get the results as well." Thursday's UEFA Cup trip to SK Slavia Praha is almost certain to come too soon for Lennon, while the 19-year-old could yet be a doubt for the return in London a fortnight later and England's next Group E qualifier against the Macedonians.
