Kieron Dyer's hopes of being available for Newcastle United FC's UEFA Cup trip to US Città di Palermo next week have been dashed by a training ground injury to the former England midfielder.
The 27-year-old ended a six-month spell on the treatment table by playing in Newcastle's English League Cup win against Portsmouth FC on Wednesday. He had hoped to follow that appearance with a starting role in Saturday's Premiership game against Charlton Athletic FC, but now faces at least two weeks on the sidelines after damaging his left eye in training.
Newcastle manager Glenn Roeder explained: "Kieron took a knock to his left eye in what can only be described as a freak accident. He will not take part in contact training for at least two weeks." The former Ipswich Town FC player will therefore be unavailable for the UEFA Cup Group H trip to Palermo next Thursday, with Newcastle having defeated Fenerbahçe SK in their opening group match.
