Rangers must wait on Webster

Rangers FC have been told they cannot field Andy Webster until FIFA resolve issues relating to his move from Heart of Midlothian FC to Wigan Athletic FC.

Rangers FC have been told they cannot field on-loan defender Andy Webster until FIFA has resolved issues relating to his transfer from Heart of Midlothian FC to Wigan Athletic FC.

Changing position
The 24-year-old Scottish international centre-back joined Wigan from Hearts at the start of the season, taking advantage of a FIFA-adopted EU law which allowed him to join a club outside Scotland provided he gave adequate notice. However, FIFA will now re-evaluate Webster's position following his return to Scotland on loan.

Decisions pending
Webster is still officially registered with the Edinburgh club at the Scottish Football Association (SFA) and FIFA, which has yet to rule on a fee for his transfer to Wigan, must also now decide whether he can play for Rangers. "The whole issue is now with FIFA," said an SFA spokesman. "They will decide what happens next." Webster is currently sidelined for six weeks having suffered medial ligament damage during his first training session with Rangers.
