Klasnić set for kidney transplant

Werder Bremen and Croatia forward Ivan Klasnić needs a kidney transplant and is set for surgery this week that will keep him out for at least two months.

Donor found
The Croatian international, a key part of his country's UEFA EURO 2008™ campaign, was diagnosed with potential kidney failure last November when being treated for appendicitis. After recovering from the latter problem, it was decided that he should have an operation once a suitable donor could be found.

Full support
Bremen coach Thomas Schaaf said: "First of all it is important for Ivan to get well again. He will get all the time he needs. We hope that the surgery will go without problems and that he is soon back playing football." Klasnić, 27 next Monday, has played 12 times in the Bundesliga this season, scoring once. His enforced absence means he will also sit out next month's UEFA Cup last-32 tie with AFC Ajax.
