Onyewu to bolster Newcastle

Newcastle United FC have strengthened their injury-hit defence by signing USA international Oguchi Onyewu in a loan move from R. Standard de Liège.

Newcastle United FC have strengthened their injury-hit defence by signing United States centre-back Oguchi Onyewu on loan for the rest of the season from R. Standard de Liège.

Belgian experience
The 24-year-old, who appeared in all three of his country's matches at last summer's FIFA World Cup and has won 17 caps, has been in Europe since 2002, when he moved to France to join FC Metz. He travelled across the border to Belgium, in a loan deal with RAA Louviéroise, a year later before switching to Standard in 2004. Onyewu has scored six goals in 74 Belgian First Division games for the Liege club and will hope to bring that experience to bear at English Premiership outfit Newcastle, who face another Belgian side, SV Zulte Waregem, in the UEFA Cup Round of 32.
