AZ Alkmaar defender Barry Opdam has suffered what could be a serious leg injury which may rule him out of the UEFA Cup quarter-final tie against Werder Bremen.

Coach fearful
After returning to the team following a hamstring strain, Opdam limped off half an hour into AZ's 0-0 draw at Heracles Almelo on Sunday after damaging his left leg. AZ coach Louis van Gaal said. "It looks like a serious injury. He has torn or overstretched the knee ligament. What it is exactly has to be examined but I think Opdam will be out for weeks." AZ face Werder Bremen in the UEFA Cup on 5 and 24 April.
