Martens to stay at AZ until 2012

Midfielder Maarten Martens has signed a one-year contract extension with UEFA Cup contenders AZ Alkmaar, binding him to the club until 2012.

AZ Alkmaar midfielder Maarten Martens has signed a one-year extension to his contract with the UEFA Cup contenders. The 22-year-old Belgian international's deal will now run until the summer of 2012 and is a sign of the progress he has made since he joined AZ last summer from RKC Waalwijk.

International debut
Martens has scored nine times in the league and twice in the UEFA cup already this season. He also made his first two international appearances for Belgium in their friendly with the Czech Republic in February and UEFA EURO 2008™ qualifier in Portugal the following month. Louis van Gaal's AZ meet Werder Bremen in the second leg of their UEFA Cup quarter-final on Thursday with the scores level at 0-0.
