Villarreal CF have signed Spanish international right-back Ángel López from relegated RC Celta de Vigo for around €6m as they prepare for the UEFA Cup.
The Castellon club have agreed a five-year contract with the 26-year-old, who has made four appearances for Spain. He will be officially presented to the club's supporters today after undergoing medical tests at the Madrigal Stadium. López came through the youth system at UD Las Palmas, leaving the club to join Celta midway through the 2002/03 season. He scored six goals in 159 league appearances for Celta and helped them reach the UEFA Cup Round of 16 last season. He will return to the competition this season with his new club in the first round.
Meanwhile, Villarreal have received some good news with Mexican-born forward Guille Franco being granted an Italian passport. The 30-year-old, who joined the club from CF Monterrey in 2005, has been given Italian citizenship as his wife is an Italian national. He will thus no longer be classed as a non-EU national, leaving an extra space available for a non-EU player in their league games.
