Hartson out of UEFA Cup final

Celtic FC striker John Hartson has been ruled out of the UEFA Cup final against FC Porto.

Celtic FC striker John Hartson has been ruled out of the UEFA Cup final against FC Porto in Seville on Wednesday after failing to overcome a back injury.

Three weeks out
The Welsh international forward has not played since scoring against Rangers FC three weeks ago, but Celtic manager Martin O'Neill hoped he would recover in time to face the Portuguese 1.Liga champions.

'Massive blow'
O’Neill admitted that the absence of the striker would be a major loss for his side. "This is an absolutely massive blow, both for John and for the football club," the Celtic manager said.

Crucial role
"He's been absolutely immense for us this season, and has played a crucial role in helping the team to reach the UEFA Cup final," O'Neill said. "It's terrible news and I'm just so disappointed for him."

Trophy trail
Celtic are aiming to win their first European trophy for 36 years having reached the UEFA Cup final by defeating another Portuguese side, Boavista FC, by a 2-1 aggregate scoreline in the semi-finals.
