Sevilla show form but Brann stun Depor

Sevilla FC started their bid for a third UEFA Cup in four years with victory at home to FC Salzburg. Yet while two of Spain's other first round contenders – debutants Real Racing Club Santander and former winners Valencia CF – also lead their ties, RC Deportivo La Coruña will have a 2-0 deficit to overcome against SK Brann on 2 October after defeat in Norway.

Goals at either end of the game proved the key for 2005/06 and 2006/07 winners Sevilla, who did not defend the trophy last season as they competed in the UEFA Champions League. Diego Capel gave the home side a sixth-minute lead, turning in a Jesús Navas pass from the right after it had evaded the reach of Luis Fabiano. Alexander Zickler almost levelled for Salzburg five minutes later before Capel and Luis Fabiano missed further opportunities. Andrés Palop saved well from Christoph Leitgeb on the hour mark but it was Adriano who struck two minutes into added time to give Sevilla a healthy advantage to take to Austria.

Brann, who knocked out Club Brugge KV to reach the group stage last year, look in good shape for a return after a superb display of counterattacking football against the UEFA Intertoto Cup winners in Norway. The home side took the lead on 25 minutes when Olafur Örn Bjarnason converted a penalty after Erlend Hanstveit had been upended. That lead was doubled 14 minutes later, as Jan Gunnar Solli shot somehow slipped through the grasp of goalkeeper Daniel Aranzubia. Both sides had their chances after the break, the biggest coming when Brann's Erik Huseklepp dribbled his way through and hit the post from close range. Deportivo rarely threatened, but Alberto Lopo saw a good shot from outside the box palmed over by goalkeeper Kenneth Udjus.

Racing have a slender advantage to take to Finland thanks to Jonathan’s 57th-minute goal on their UEFA Cup debut. The Cantabrian club's only previous European experience came with a run to the 2003 UEFA Intertoto Cup third round and Honka, who already have come through two ties on their own maiden campaign in this competition, had long spells of possession in the first half. However, they could not find the target and instead on-loan Villarreal CF striker Jonathan broke the deadlock after collecting a Juanjo pass, the cue for Racing to sit back and protect their lead.
