Spartak choose Chernyshov

Russia Under-21 coach Andrei Chernyshov has replaced Oleg Romantsev at the helm of FC Spartak Moskva.

FC Spartak Moskva have appointed Russia Under-21 trainer Andrei Chernyshov as their new coach to replace Oleg Romantsev.

Early departure
It had been thought that Romantsev would remain in charge for two more matches but, after a 1-0 defeat by FC Saturn Moskovskaya Oblast last Thursday, his departure was brought forward. "All sides behaved decently," Spartak chairman Andrei Chervichenko said, after a two-hour meeting with Romantsev. "The mind prevailed over the heart, and the conversation ended with a constructive decision."

Yuran to assist
In confirming Chernyshov's appointment, Chervichenko added: "The contract with Chernyshov will be signed this week. It will most likely be an 18-month contract with an extension clause." It is unclear yet whether Chernyshov will continue with his Russia U21 duties. Former Spartak striker, and current reserve team coach, Sergei Yuran will assist Chernyshov.

Varied career
The 35-year-old Chernyshov played under Romantsev at Spartak during the early 1990s, winning the title with him in 1992 and 93. He also played for FC Dinamo Moskva and FC Torpedo Moskva, and had spells abroad with SK Sturm Graz, FC PAOK Thessaloniki and R. Antwerp FC.

Successful spell
The former defender retired in 2001 following a knee injury, and began his coaching career. He took charge of the Russian Under-16 side before progressing to the U21s in August 2002. He has since guided the team to second place in their qualifying group for the UEFA European Under-21 Championship.
