Lithuanian coach Saulius Sirmelis has replaced Englishman Paul Ashworth as head coach of Latvian Virsliga side FK Ventspils.
"The contract between the club and Mr Ashworth has been terminated by mutual agreement," said a club statement. "The board deemed the team's results unsatisfactory," added Ventspils vice-president Sergei Barkovski. "We thank Mr Ashworth for his work, and we think Ventspils benefited from it.
We are happy to continue working with Mr Ashworth in other capacities, but it is clear that he will not be coaching the club as from now."
Sirmelis steps in
Barkovski has confirmed that Sirmelis, who recently left Lithuanian champions FBK Kaunas, has signed a three-year contract with the club. "
The contract has been talked over, now it is time to get to work," said Sirmelis, who is on the coaching staff of the Lithuanian national team. "The team is not in the best of situations at the moment." The 47-year-old has confirmed that Ashworth's assistant Saulius Cekanavicius will stay on as his assistant at the club.
Under Ashworth, Ventspils lost the last two Latvian titles on the final day of the season to FC Skonto, but this season has been less successful. Ventspils are third in the Virsliga, trailing leaders FHK Liepajas Metalurgs by seven points having played a game more. Ventspils are due to meet Wisla Plock in the forthcoming UEFA Cup qualifying round.
