SL Benfica have signed Spain Under-21 midfielder Javi García in a €7m transfer from Real Madrid CF.

Five-year contract
The 22-year-old has agreed a contract running until 2014 after leaving the club that gave him his chance in the game. Javi García, who helped Spain win the 2006 European U19 title and played at this summer's U21 finals, made his Madrid debut aged 17 in 2004 but after three appearances was loaned to CA Osasuna for the 2007/08 campaign. He returned to the Santiago Bernabéu last season, starting three Liga matches alongside 12 substitute outings. Benfica begin their UEFA Europa League campaign in the play-off round on 20 and 27 August.
