Germany midfielder Christian Gentner will return to VfB Stuttgart at the end of the season after making the "difficult decision" to leave Bundesliga champions VfL Wolfsburg after three years.

'Personal wish'
The 24-year-old will make a free transfer to the club where he began his career this summer, despite Wolfsburg's best efforts to retain his services. "We would like to keep Christian Gentner, but he has had his mind made up for a long time now," said coach Armin Veh. "He has come a long way at Wolfsburg." Indeed, when he left Stuttgart in summer 2007 – a loan switch that was made permanent the following year – Gentner was just breaking through; he will return a German international when his contract runs out. "I have had a great time at Wolfsburg so far and will give my all in the coming months," said the Nurtinger-born player. "It was a difficult decision, but in the end it was my wish to return to Stuttgart."
